Poetry and Music

Hey gang,

I don't have a lot of time to write out a full post, but I wanted to share an example of a beautiful combination of poetry and music.  In 1965 the Jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, released an historic album titled A Love Supreme.  The last track consists of John Coltrane "playing" the words of a poem he wrote that is a praise of God.  There's too much to say about it right now, but it's a beautiful piece of music and poetry, and deserves your attention.

  1. WOW.
    what a trip.
    really needed that.

on an ascetic note (or maybe psychological, or both) it is amazing how we can hear words that are not there when promted by text. but then again, maybe they are there, the mind sending a million vibrations.

loved the simplicity, honest, and soul behind each part of the video. we forget how simple music, God, and life really are.

    Thank you John.

  2. Thank you for posting this link. A Love Supreme is one of my favorite pieces of Jazz, but I never realized that the rhythm of the psalm-poem is in the music. I suppose this could be called "syllabic" music;-) It was an awesome experience to worship at the church of John Coltrane through this video.

  3. I like John Coltrane very much as well and really appreciated this link. The integration of the two kinds of art is extraordinary.
